M.C.C. V. OTAGO
M.C.C. WIN
BY TEN WICKETS,
(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.)
DUNEDIN, Jan. 2
Tn beautiful weather and on a much improved wicket, tfie M.C.C. team defeated Otago at Carisbrook yesterday by ton wickets. When play was resumed Otago had lost seven wickets for 143 runs. Alloo added only two to his total, and it became evident that Otago would l>e lucky to avoid a follow on. Monk quickly followed, and when Clark, the last man in, went to the wicket, nineteen were still required. Dickinson and Clark made a determined stand, hut the former 101 l a victim to Woolley when seven runs wee still needed, and the innings closed for 166.
In its second venture, Otago made a. much better start, although Dunning. who partnered Knight, was defeated with the total at 22.
When Cavanagh came in, there was a decided improvement and by steady and on occasions attractive hatting, they took the score to 72 for the second wicket. Blunt joined Knight, and another useful partnership began, Blunt doing most of the scoring, while Knight presented a solid front to everything that came along, Then camo a stroke of bad luck for Otago, When Blunt was just beginning to get properly into his stride, he hit his wicket. Matters from this point took a turn for the worse.
Five wickets were down for 115, when Elmes joined Knight in a breezy partnership, which took the score to 137. Dickinson stayed until 153 runs were on the hoard, and when the innings closed the total was 160.
The Englishmen required only five runs for victory and Turnbull collected that number in one over from Dunning.
Otago was saved from an innings defeat only by the excellent fighting stand of Knight, who secured a fine “double” by scoring 44 in the first innings and 51 in the second. His patient and careful innings to-day, during which he did not give a chance, was of inestimable value to his side, and he was given on ovation when he returned to the pavilion, his wicket being the last to be taken. In the absence of Garrard, who is indisposed, Mills captained the Auckland team. Smeeton replaced Garrard. The playing area is in capital order.
Canterbury won the toss and opened with Crombo and Merritt who faced the bowling of Wcnslcy and Mut boson. The latter was sending them down well and with eleven up Merritt snicked a ball to Weir who made a smart catch low down. Roberts ioined Crombo and with 32 up for 32 minutes play Wenslev got Crombe’.s wicket when Rowntree brought olf one of his characteristic catches by the wicket, 23 —2—B.
Page scored the first boundary of the match off Smeeton, but the batsmen were very cautions. Runs were very slow. Then Roberts got his eye in and began to open out, treating the spectators to great batting. When 47 had been posted for an hour’s play Roberts claimed 25 of them. At this stage Smeeton bowled another maiden (having opened with one). At 57 Page survived an l.b.w. Appeal off Wensley. After Smeeton had 21 knocked off him Anthony came on, while Matheson replaced Wensley (one for 23) at the other end, the double change quietening the batsmen down considerably. Roberts reached 30 after being at the wickets for 58 minutes. Turning Matheson twice to the fence for four Page reached 25, bringing the total to 80. After ten had been scored off three overs of Matheson he was replaced by Wensley.
