ACCIDENTAL DROWNING

GISBORNE, Jan. 3

A verdict of accidental drowning, while bathing in a river at Rore on New Year’s Day was returned at the inquest this morning on Rev. Adolph Alexander Barham, who was unable to swim. He appeared to take a fainting turn and fell off the rocky ledge into deep water.

SERIOUS INJURIES.

GISBORNE, Jan. 3

A young man, Christopher Jobson, returning from the pictures at Tolaga Bay date last evening was injured seriously when his cycle swerved in front of an overtaking lorry, driven by Dave Tuutau. The injured man was inexpert as a cyclist and evidently became confused by the noise of the approaching lorry, which left tho crown of the road to pass him, but failed to avoid a collision, when Jobson also swerved. Jobson’s condition is reported as serious to-day. His injuries are believed to include a fractured skull and broken arm.

AUCKLAND, Jan. 3

James Henry Rogers, described as a silver bettor was, fined £4O for carrying on business as a bookmaker.

DISMISSED OPERATORS

AUCKLAND, Jan. 3,

Two of the telegraph staff, who were dismissed from the service as a result of the recent inquiry, interviewed Hons Stallworthy and Mr Donald, and asked that the sentence' lie reconsidered. The Ministers promised the matter would receive full consideration.

SUDDEN DFJATH,

NAPIER, Jan. 3

Mrs Mary Isabella Gardener, a widow aged 51, a tea-room manageress, died suddenly in the bath yesterday afternoon while alone in the house where she hoarded. She had suffered from heart trouble for some years, and apparently fainted or had a seizure.

INQUEST' VERDICT

NAPIER, Jan. 3,

At the inquest on Mrs Dorothy Emily Dorset, who was found dead in bed on Dec. 19th. Coroner Mowslem. returned a formal verdict. The evidence showed deceasd suffered from heart and kidney touible for some time. Death was ascribed to a seizure.
