£3OO FINES

(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) HAMILTON, January 1. Harry Abraham Samuels, tailor, was 'fined £IOO for keeping a common gaming house, and £2OO for bookmaking. His premises were raided on New Year’s Eve, when a. large quantity of betting material was found. The evidence showed that accused was in a large way, and was an agent for Ike Cohen, the bookmaker of Wellington. Mr Wvvern Wilson, the Magistrate, said Samuels had been convicted previously, hut was fined on that occasion inadequately. His business was now apparently extensive, with an annual turnover of £IO,OOO. Samuels was further charged with bribery and corruption, in sending two detectives each a case of pipes and ten pounds in money. On this charge he was remanded on bail of £2OO.
