NEW ENGINES FOR OLD
QUICK CHANGES IN NEW LORRIES.
LONDON, October 28. Much interest has been created by the revelation made on Saturday by Sir William Morris’s plans to produce heavy lorries and motor-coaches in large quantities at his secret Birmingham factory. I can now give further details of the manufacture of these commercial vehicles, which will range from 50 cwt. to 10 tons. One of the greatest losses in operating a fleet of commercial vehicles is encountered when they have to be laid up for overhaul, for they become a dead loss for several days, In the new Morris chassis it will be necessary only to undo a few bolts, when the radiator, engine, clutch and gearbox can be run out as a whole on a trolley. A new radiator, engine clutch and gearbox can then be run in and the vehicle can be on the road again in an hour or so. The other unit can be repaired at leisure. This will cheapen operating costs tremendously. A Morris exhibit at the forthcoming Commercial Motor Show at Olympia, Kinsington, W., which opens on November 7, will be a tiny fire engine capable of a speed of about 50 miles an hour, to deal with small outbreaks before they have reached serious dimensions.
