THE RAILWAY SERVICE. ALLEGED DISSENSION IN THE E.F. AND C.A. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON. Dec. 27. There has been dissension among the members of tbe Engine Drivers’ Firemen’s and Cleaners’ Association during the past two years. Action was taken to obtain a ruling from the Supreme Court as to the standing of some of the executive officials’ positions, with the result that there is now a breach in the ranks of the members, and the position is acute. It is reported that- recent action on the part of some of the executive has resulted in the resignation of the General Secretary of the Association. Air AY. Al’Alley, who has held the position since the formation of the union. The dispute is likely to cause a serious split amongst the members.
SURF RESCUE
CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 28. A narrow escape from drowning took place at New Brighton at about 10.30 a.m. yesterday, when a man got into difficulties while bathing. He was noticed by Carl Couldwell, who was on beach control, to he out of his depth and caught by a strong undertow. Couldwell immediately went to his aid, and although he had no reel or line succeeded in bringing him to shore. The man. whose name is not known, was middle aged, of big build, and nearly 16 stone in weight, hut lie was able to help himself to a certain extent, this aiding the patrolman’s efforts. He did not require assistance when the shore was reached, and expressed his appreciation of Couldwell’s action.
MANUKA PASSENGER DIES. DUNEDIN, Dec. 30. The death occurred at Tautuku yesterday of AYilliam Blackwood Lawson, a passenger on hoard tho Manuka. He contracted acute pneumonia as the result of exposure following the wreck. He was aged 52. BABY DROWNED IN BATH.
AUCKLAND, Dec. 30. Donald Nelson, aged 15 months, son of C. J. Nelson, of Devonport, was drowned in his hath last evening. Airs Nelson had bathed the ether two children''-'* left the bathroom to see them to bed; When she returned two minutes later she found Donald’s body floating in the hath. Artificial respiration was used and a doctor called but when he arrived the baby was dead.
VETERANu PASSES. GISBORNE, Dec. 30. Obituary.—Jolm'xW alsh, a veteran of the Armed Constabulary and British Forces. He was engaged in the Maori "War. Aged’ 85. WOMAN MOLESTED. RESULT OF BROKEN ENGAGEMENT. PALMERSTON N., December 28. Henry Money was charged at the Police Court with assaulting a woman by following her about and by threats of violence, preventing her from pursuing her lawful way. The complainant alleged that the accused threatened her with a razor at Awapmn racecourse. The police stated that the young lady was previously engaged to the accused, but had broken it off on account of his gambling and drinking'habits. Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence it called upon.
