In attempting to arrest these a policeman was struck on the head with a baton and fell. Sticks and stones were used by the Mau, and the (police had to use revolvers. A machine ‘gun was fired over t.ieir heads. Two Samoans were killed and thirty wounded. ... One constable was killed and several were injured.' ' Mr .Smythe was one of the deportees from Samoa, along with Mr Nelson, and his time having expired be was allowed to return to Samoa, Mr Hall Skelton is the well known Auckland solicitor who has been counsel for the Samoans, ■ and who pleaded /•their,-causes' in the cases which were : heard in Auckland. t VISITING SAMOA^ AUCKLAND, Dec.. 30. ■O. F. Nelson states Hall Skelton, his leading counsel, arrived in Samoa on Saturday with A. G. Smyth to collect evidence and to brief witnesses in connection with the libel action at Auckland on February 20.
