EMPIRE TRADE
MOVEMENT IN CANADA. VANCOUVER, November 13. A mammoth plan, to increase Canada’s trade with the Motherland and the Empire, has been adopted by the conference of tne Canadian Chambers of Commerce. It will supplement the policy of the Federal Government, announced when the effect of the United States tariff on Canadian products was observed.
A committee, consisting of leading Canadian citizens,, representing various branches of trade, commerce, agriculture, and education, will center with all interested bodies and with similar committees appointed from various portions of the Empire as to the best ways and means by which trade within the Empire may be promoted. At the annual meeting in Toronto in 1930, a representative delegation of business men will be invited from Newfoundland, that part of the Empire nearest the Dominion. Invitations will also be sent to the Associated Chambers of Commerce of the British AVest Indiies to have delegates in attendance.
It was further decided by the national executive that the Canadian Chamber undertake the organising of a Canadian delegation to the Congress yjf the Federation of Chambers of Commerce of the British Empire, which is being held in London next May and at whic lirepresentatives of the Dominions will discuss with the Canadian delegation the furtherance of inter-Empire trade.
A mission of Canadian business men to Japan and China will leave Vancouver in 1939, and visit Yokohama, Tokyo, and Kobe in Japan, and HongKong and Shanghai in China. Arrangements will be made for a representative Canadian delegation to attend the British Empire Exhibition in Buenos Ayres in the spring of 1931 and extend a personal invitation to Latin American business men to join with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in a tour of Canada, and at the annual convention of the Chamber in the fall of 1931.
The national executive approved the following objectives for the programme of 1930:
The taking of referenda on national economic subjects. The organising of the Dominion-wide inter-city fire prevention and health competitions.
The organising of a Canadian session for developing inter-Empire commerce and for participation in the conference on Empire trade, and in the congress of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce of the British Empire.
The organising of an excursion of Canadian business men to Japan and China. Specialised study <u Canadian textbooks as used in Canadian schools which are of foreign publication, and the circulation of foreign periodicals and newspapers in Canada. A goodwill and trade tour in Canadu of Latin-American business men in 1931 and support to the British Empire Exhibition at Buenos Ayres in the same year. A conference on national distribution.
