PETONE JOB FINISHED.

(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, December 27. In a reply to a telegram which he sent to the Chairman" of Cabinet Unemployment Committee (Mr Forbeß) in. regard to the dismissal on JXmas Eve of some sixty casual workers from Petone Railway Workshops, Mr AValter Nash, Member for Hutt, today received the following reply from Mr Forbes: “Sorty to hear of the dismissal of men from Railway AVorkshops, which, I understand, was owing to the work they were engaged on being finished. I have communicated with the Unemployment Officer asking him to see if further work can be found.’* RABBITER DROWNED. DUNEDIN, Dec. 27. The body of Adolphus Brophy, a rabbiter on the Puketoi Station, was found in the Taieri River, near Patearoa, yesterday. Deceased had been missing since Tuesday night, and it is supposed that he was drowned while attempting to cross the river on Lis horse. Early in the week the river was slightly swollen. Deceased was 50 years of age. CARNIVAL WEEK. GISBORNE, Dec. 27. Gisborne was en fete \vhen the first Mardi Gras opened festivities began. They continue for a week. A feature was the baby show of 76 entries of which only three were bottle-fed the judge, Dr Bowie, commenting' that the .number was a tribute to the work of the Plunket Society in Poverty Bay. GISBORNE, December 27

Before Magistrate Harper this morning, a lorry driver named Albert Edwad Simpson pleaded guilty to being found in charge c'f a lorry at an early hour in the morning whie in a state of intoxication. The police stated the accused was convicted of a similar offence ill Auckland on May 18th 1927, and his license then cancelled for two years.

The Magistrate said the offence was serious, and accused did not appear to take notice ( of His previous warning. Accused was fined £ls, and his license was cancelled and he was declared unfit to hold a license for two years.

CAR CONVERTING

MASTER.TON, December 26.

Charged with converting a car to his own use on Christmas Eve, a young man named Leslie Hay pleaded guilty before the Police Court and was fined £5. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 28.' B. V. Wright with 150 won t he Christchurch /amateur championship. E. M. Macfarlane with 152 was itu-ner-up.
