THEFT FROM POLICE STATION (Australian Press Association) MELBOURNE;, Dec. 27. Several hundreds of pounds, takings at a local theatre, were left at tne Prahrau Police Station for safety, owing to the banks being closed. The money was placed in an empty cell. This morning the cell was found still locked, but the money was gone. BATHERS SENSATION. (Received this day at noon.) SYDNEY, December 28. There was a sensation at Narrowbeen beach when four bathers were caught by the current and carried out. Simultaneously a large shark was seen cruising round. Lifesavers courageously donned belts and succeeded in reaching those in trouble but the lines were severed by jagged rocks and the life-sav-ers discarded their belts and brought the patients ashore. During the swim to the beach a shark swam within a ■few feet of one of the life-savers. SHARKS' CAUGHT. (Received this day at noon.) SYDNEY, December 2.8 Two sharks were caught in the harbour yesterday, one at Newington where children were swimming only a few minutes before. N.S.AY. FLOODS. (Received this dnv at noon.) SYDNEY, Dec. 28. Floods in the south and terrific storms in the north and north-west caused widespread damage, and dislocated telegraph and railway services on the south coast. Wasliawavs occurred on the railway lines, water being three feet over the

permanent way. The outskirts of the town of CootamuiKiara are flooded. A huge inland sea extends for miles.

A terrific electric storm, followed by cyclonic storms caused enormous damage in Grafton district. Cattle were struck dead, homes wrecked and the town plunged in darkness. Many persons Had remarkable escapes from death.
