One is Miss Gladys Watkins, of Wellington, who is also the only New Zealander. She played Christmas carols on the twenty-three bells of the Wellington War Memorial Carillon,that are on exhibition in Hyde Park. It is hoped to have the complete range of fifty hells ready by January Ist. lor a try-out in Hyde Park before shipment to Wellington. AI iss Watkins, who luis been studying for ii year at the famous Carillon School at Mnlines, Belgium, will he earilloner when the memorial is erected m Wellington.
FIRE IN STEAMER
SINGAPORE, Dec. 26
Fifty passengers were roused from their sleep at 3 o’clock in the morning and ordered ashore, following an outbreak of fire on the liner President Vanburen, which was making a round the world trip. The vessel was alongside the wharf at the time. The fire originated in the boiler room and spread to the hold where it destroyed £9OOO worth of rubber and another £6OOO more was damaged by water. r l he Vanburen was leaving for New Y ork to-morrow,
JAPAN’S PARLIAMENT. TOKIO, Dec. 20. To-day the Emperor attired as a generalissimo, escorted by cavalry, proceeded to the House of Peers and personally read tbe rescript opening Parliament. NEW MEDICAL SCHOOL. SIX MILLION DOLLAR DONATION. Roger said tbe sum would permit the finest medical centre in Europe to be built, capable of accommodating ten thousand students. FRENCH PROPOSAL. PARIS, Dec. 26. M. Harriot told tbe Chamber of Deputies M. Briand's proposal for Hie united States of Europe was possible and should be given immediate support, if as I hope France, in September, will carry a definite project for federation to Geneva. Every - thing demonstrates that the project is possible. Will France add this supplement to the world’s peace ? “M. Herriot declared it should be put into effect as soon as possible to av.oid conflict (with the gioiving stream of economic operations and M. Georges Tchiteherin will return to Moscow early in January and urge the acceptance of bis resignation as Soviet Foreign Commissinr. Tchiteherin who has been under treatment at Wiesbaden for over a year, has been unable . to take any active part in foreign affairs, and asked to be relieved some time ago. Tt is believed here that the Soviet will accept bis resignation as a result at the forthcoming journey which will he permitted by physicians onty after a thorough examination of their patient.
LIFEBOAT RESCUE
LONDON, December 26
Fleetwood lifeboat on Xmas Day rescued six men, the skeleton crew df a French steamer Tchad 'from Bordeaux to Morecambe. The Tchad dragged anchor and drifted piling on the sands. Rockets were unavailing and the crew soaked mattresses with parafin and burned them attracting a lifeboat crew who launched the craft in the teeth of a gale and battled for hours and threw a rope to the vessel rescuing te crew
