TREATMENT OF PRISONERS
AMERICAN INTEREST IN BRITISH REPORTS. (UniCod Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). WASHINGTON, December 23. Lively interest is being shown by the 'Labour Department in the reports of conditions of imprisonment of British citizens who run into the difficulties of the immigration laws. Officials expressed confidence that no situation had arisen to cause friction between Hie two countries, although it was admitted that the gaols, especially in border towns, were crowded with persons awaiting deportation. The Justice Department, however, ’had received no information concerning the alleged ill-treatment of British prisoners. The Immigration Commissioner, Mr Husband, stated: I do . not know of any British subjects: who have been detained except for violation of the immigration laws; unfortunately wy, cannot, help that.
