MANUKA WRECKAGE. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Dec. 24. Although rough weather is being experienced in. Gatlin’s coast; verylittle wreckage is coining ashore from the Manuka and the vessel is not breaking up to the extent anticipated. Murray Fuller, who lost valuable pictures, is searching near the scene and has secured a number of pictures including one valued at four hundred guineas. The wreckage extends over twenty miles, mostly- to the south of Long Point. SERIOUS CHARGE. DUNEDIN, Dee. 24. George McGavin O’Kane was charged with negligently driving a motor car at Roxburgh on November 30, thereby causing the death of Stanley Onia-nd. He reserved his defence and was committed for trial. FLOOD' DANGER PAST. DUNEDIN, Dee. 24. Heavy hail showers and rain fell this morning, and the weather, though showing signs of improving at times, is still cold and threatening for the ’Xmas. All danger of a flood is now Over. STORM IN CANTERBURY. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 24. The heaviest rain storm, for years was experienced in Christchurch anu suburbs yesterday afternoon and during tire night lashed by a gusty southester, it attained considerable violence at times. In some parts, the streets were over a foot deep in water. Wirtbs Circus had to postpone its performance owing to the storm. The weather is now clearing. MAYOR’S CAR DAMAGED. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 24. While the gale was at its height a five seater motor car driven by the .Mayor (Rev. J. K. Archer) and containing also the Mayoress and Alls Green, a member of the Hospital Board, was struck by a moving tram in Cathedral Square, a wheel being doubled up and tne axle bent. The occupants were uninjured. The car had to he towed to a garage.
WINCHMAN KILLED. GISBORNE, December 24. During lightering operations at Tolago Bay yesterday the steamer Bengauachan fouled the top mast of the lighter Tiroa, the truck of the Tiroa mast crashing to the deck and striking James Robert Knopwood 38, a winchman, and inflicted injuries from which lie died after removal to Gisborne hospital by the aumblance. Deceased leaves a wife and three children . TREASURY ADMINISTRATION WELLINGTON, Dec 24, Sir Joseph Ward announced to-day important changes in the Treasury administration would take -effect as from Ist. January. The present secretary, Air Hayes, is retiring from the positions of Paymaster General, Receiver General, ana Secretary to the Treasury, and will take up the office of Financial Adviser to the Government in place of Colonel Esson, who has relinquished these duties. The Public Service Commissioner has appointed his present assistant secretary, Park, to the position of permanent Head ot the Treasury rendered vacant by the above change.
