An extraordinary story, involving a husband's sale of his wife, was told to* (lav at Snint-Polten. when an exsoldier named Franz Grassmann was charged with murdering Dr. Karl Blendler and attempting to murder and seriously wounding Therese Grassmann his wife. | It was staod that Dr Blendler, then 1 a medical man with a prosperous practice, fell in love with Therese Grassmann at Kirchbcrg, Lower Austria, in | 1916. He supported her husband after | his return from the war and also the woman’s three children, eventually buying the wife from Grassmann. Blendler. who was steadily bhv kmailed bv Grassmann after the sale of the wife, was in 19?6 sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for illegal operations. This ruined him, because his doctor’s diploma was cancelled and he could only practise secretly. As he could not give Grassmann any more, money, it was alleged Grassmann wounded him severely with a revolver two years ago and was imprisoned for a month. Grassmann, according to the evidence went to Brendler’s house again last summer and shot him dead, and also wounded bis wife before being overpowered.
