SCHOOL CONCERT

The School Concert was repeated last night at the Princess Theatre before another crowded house, • and the whole programme went splendidly reflecting the greatest credit on all concerned, and in particular on Miss Anne Luff the very capable organiser. The iHliputians opened the programme very brightly, and were followed with some humorous numbers. “Rendezvous” was again captivating, while Joan Baker’s oration in defence of the Jews was something of a masterpiece. The fairy scene gave a charming setting and some pleasing vocai numbers. “Father Dear,’’ was a delight, and the Maori melodies, concluding with a haka as to the manner borne, one of the best scenes of f,he evening. _ The barber burlesque was decidedly humorous. It remained for the trial scene from tilt ■ “Merchant of,Venice,” to bring out seme very promising talent, the . juveniles doing splendidly. The pan parade was a happy number, but the life on the ocean wave was a riot, with sea chanties a la Westminster, Glee singers. The setting was capi-tal.-and. the representation most sue--tbssful: The final minstrel songs,: and ■■the closing stage picture captivating tiie audience making a pleasing farewell. scene. *

A word of praise is due to the school orchestra led by Master Jock ejftaveley. It undcM-took something out of the ordinary and performed excellently throughout, the talent displayed being in keeping with the general excellence of quite a remarkable programme. Appropriately, Miss Duff* was asked to sing and had a popular reception, os* was deserved. The first vocal number was “Afton Water,” followed by “Coming Through the Eye.” Incidentally, “Bo Peep” and “Jack Sprat” presented Miss Duff with a handsome bouquet and a huge box of chocolates —the little spenie bringing forth the sustained plaudits of the audience. Mr A. C. Armstrong, Chairman of the School Committee, returned thanks to all, and in the course of his remarks covered much appropriate ground affecting the welfare of the school. It was intimated the takings for two nights’ performances approximated £IOO, and Miss Duff and all her assistants were heartily /banked. Mr Armstrong spoke of the success of the school year and iributed the work of the Rector (Mr (Partridge) who had raised the standard and tone of the School. Regret was expressed at the approaching departure of Mr Williamson who had been a valued member of the staff. The parents were urged to support the school to the fullest extent. A few mono scholars would suffice to secure a separate High School, and as such excellent results were being achieved each year, there was every reason to ask for and expect that support in the interests of all concerned.

, The hearty singing of the National Anthem and cheers for Miss Duff closed a remarkably successful entertainment in every way creditable to all concerned.
