HOKITIKA HIGH SCHOOL BOARD

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 18. A special meeting of the Board was held at the Town Hall at 3 p.m. Present: Hon. H. L. Michel (Chairman), Messrs ,J. A. Murdoch, T. W. Bruce, T. W. Duff, and Jas. King. The Chairman referred to the bereavement of Mr E. Partridge, Rector of the High School, and on his motion, seconded by Mr King, a motion of condolence was carried by the members.

The Chairman stated the meeting had been called to consider tenders for renovating the Board’s building in Sewell Street known as Government House in order that same might be used for hostel purposes in connection with the District High School. One tender was received, that of W. M. Goodfcllow, at £3OO. Tile estimate of D. Stevenson, the architect was £260, at which at was considered possible to do the work. Air Stevenson’s offer at that sum was accepted, the work to be completed by the end of January.

The Acting Secretary was authorised to write the Canterbury Education Board giving notice of the withdrawal of the £SO paid by the High School Board towards salaries at the District High School. The terms on which the Board was prepared to accept an offer from S. P. Evans for the use of the Board’s building in Sewell Street, for hostel purposes were drawn up in order to afford Mr and Mrs Evans the opportunity of preparing for the reception of school boarders when the High School resumes after the holidays. The rental was made nominal so long as hostel boarders were accommodated.

Mr Murdoch submitted the lease as between the Board and the Returned Soldiers Association for the Soldiers’ Ball property. ’Same was approved and the Chairman and Air King signed on behalf of the Board, and Mr D. J. Evans as President of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. The Chairman conveyed the season’s greetings to members and the meeting concluded at 3.50 p.m.
