CHRISTCHURCH, December 18

".'To-day the two teams of visiting hoy, cricketers from the West Coast played t|ie first games against the Cantu ry Boys’ Cricket Association, and at the end of the day’s play saw the honours divided. Greymouth having won their match by the narrow margin of five runs on the first innings, whilst Hokitika were defeated by an innings and 36 runs. In the -match between Greymouth and Canterbury, McLean won the toss for the visitors, and elected to field. Canterbury showed satisfactory form in their hatting, and scored 138 runs.

T. Shaw, with five for 69, took most wickets for Greymouth, whilst S. McLean, with four for 17, secured the best howling average. N Adamsf one for 17) also showed good bowling 'form, whilst R. Kiely and M. Collett were also tried, but without success. Greymouth opened rather badly, but the later batsmen improved the position considerably, and an exciting finish saw the visitors score 143 runs. S. McLean, with a sound 39 was the top scorer, whilst. M. Collett also, batted attractively, making 35 runs. Next on the list were N. Adams with 22, arid J. Guy with 15.

Hi their second innings Canterbury declared when five wicket had fallen for 116. W. Ashby (three for 17) howled best for Grevmduth, whilst T. SI mw (one for 32) and N. Adams (one for 30) also took wickets.

Faced with the task of scoring 112 for a complete win, and with very little time to score the same, the Greymouth team hit out, and at time they had notched 69 with the loss of five wickets. S. McLean (35) and T. Shaw (13) were the top scorers. Hokitika hatted first in their game against Canterbury, but although T. Knowles who scored 26, and F. Stapleton (18) gave them a good start, the other batsmen lacked confidence, and the innings closed for 75 runs.

To this total Canterbury replied with 148. J. Williams took six wickets for 41, and F. Stapleton three for 52, they bowling best for Hokitika, wbo in their second session collapsed for 37.
