It is good ngws to know that the water supply for the town is now on a. more assured basis. The recent happening to bring about a great measure of improvement was the tapping of the Lake Kanieri water race directly at the Kanieri Forks 1 penstock. The permission to do tin's is a considerable concession, and should lie much appreciated. The town is beholden to the Kanieri Electric Coy. for the improvement, which will result in more and better water flowing ; hourly into the reservoir on Hau Han hill. It is very fortunate that there is such a fine water supply' as that afforded by tapping Lake Kanieri. It is a very great asset to the town from every point of view. The augmented service now taken from Kanieri Forks supplements the direct supply from the lake. The latter is being overhauled by the Borough authorities, the upper sections of the pipe line being renewed in liume pipes to replace the wooden pipe line used at present. It is expected that when the replacement is completed about February next the water supply to the town will be further improved. There should certainly be a g od alternative flow of water, and it is very fortunate that the town is in that position—having two good sources of supply. At Kanieri Forks, of course, the two sources combine and the water is conducted from thence by one pipe line to the reservoir. The Borough Gounc.il in times past lias expressed misgivings about the pipe line laid across Tucker Flat, which is largely swampy. The question of providing an alternative or auxiliary service over that distance will probably be the next matter for consideration on the part of the Council. The present work has been done out of accumulated revenue, without making any special levy on the ratepayers, and as a consequence there is some stringency in the Borough funds at present, and town works have to be curtailed. However, the Council appears to be meeting the general situation very economically for which the ratepayers are no doubt grateful. ’Flic position so far as the water supply is concerned lias been helped greatly bv the local electric company, and this will be appreciated specially over the summer months, when there should be ample' water within reason for all domestic and local services without the call for serious restriction in use. This will be a relief much to be grateful for and the town will benefit accordingly.

It is understood that radio advices received from the Norwegian whalers report good catches of whales outside the pack ice of the Ross Sea. 'Lhe Kosmos and her seven chasers are said to have done very well so far. The Rosslmrst Company’s fleet and that or the Southern Whaling G mpnnv which went south later have also killed a good number. The whales have now gone south into the open waters of the Ross Sea, and the three fleets are ready to follow as soon as the pack ice'opens up sufficiently to give them a safe passage.

Validating proceedings in connection with the Grey Electric Power Board’s loan of £50,000 appear in the current issue of the New Zealand Gazette. Proceedings In connection with. ilhQ poll were irregular or defective in that in the voting paper used, the Local Bodies Loan Act, 1913, was cited instead of the Local Bodies Loans Act, 1926, and the voting paper was not in conformity with the form set out in the schedule to the Loans Act, 1926, the words, “I vote” being omitted at the beginning of the two lines provided for the exercise of the vote Validation of proceedings was therefore necessary.

Recently the Arthur’s National Park Board of Control obtained authority for the issuing of permits for the shooting of deer, chamois, and thar, in the area under its control. The Board would like to clear the Park of animals altogether, if possible, hut this appears now to be a most difficult task. Thar and chamois have found the mountain region much to their liking, and have increased in numbers at a remarkable rate. Living at heights of-' 7000 and 8000ft\ as they do their extermination in the Arthur’s Pass region presents n difficult problem. On the slopes of Mount Rolleston—in fact all along the eastern heights—they are now frequently seen by mountaineers and tranipers, feeding on the flora which the Board is anxious to preserve. Even the beautiful mountain lilies do not escape them. ,It is almost certain that the chamois and thar 'have reached Arthur’s Pass from the Hermitage region, but none has so far been seen on the West Coast side of the ranges. The Board has taken the power to reduce their numbers ,if necessary, and some good sport awaits those to whom permits are issued'.
