IN ANTARCTICA
(By Russell Owen—Copyrighted 1929 by the New York Times Company, and St. Louis Post Despatch. All rights for publication reserved throughout the world. Wireless to New York Times.) GOULD’S DISCOVERY. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) BAY OF WHALES, Dec. 15. The geological party in Queen Maud Range were held in their tents yesterday by an 8-inch snow fall. Gould reports that the cache laid by Byrd on his first flight in the mountains was found on Thursday, and tne food in it gave them a good margin of safety for which they are grateful. Strong winds near the mountains had blown things about to some extent. The belief that Carmen Land is not what has been shown on the map, as the result of observations and studies of photographs made on two Southern flights, makes this part of Gould’s trip very important, and he hopes to he able to learn something definite about the land in that direction before starting back. Much cloudiness interferes with our work. He says in a message to Commander Byrd. “You surely made the Polar flight at the right time. There have been very few good flying days in December.”
