TRIAL BY JURY
ABOLISHED IN TASMANIA. HOBART, December IS. The Legislative Council has passed a Bill to abolish trial by jury in criminal cases. Two Judges are provided for instead, and a Criminal Court of Appeal will be created. Trial by jury has long been regarded in Tasmania as unsatisfactory. The acquittals in some instances have been so flagrant that the authorities have been discouraged, they declaring that there is little use in tracing down offenders.
