Splendid record nominations were received last night by the Westland Trotting Club for their New Year meeting. The list appears in another column.
M James King, bookseller has just had printed a special series of post cards and views c'f Westland. The series printed in Scotland, is an excellent one, containing many new views, and should be popular with visitors and for sending abroad.
A camping place for touring motorists, has by request been established at the Hokitika racecourse,. A Christchurch visitor this week expressed pleasure and gratification at the pleasant surroundings. The Automobile Association has made provision for cooking by gas and other conveniences for tlie visiting motorists.
The Lake Kanicri Boat Club lias decided to bold two days racing at Lake Kanicri, on Wednesday, December 25th (Christmas Day) and on Saturday (December 28th). In this issue particulars of the events for the two days appear. Nominations close with the Secretary, Mr Jos. W. H McGeorge on Wednesday next, December 18th, at 8 p.m.
A visitor to the Hokitika racecouise this week remarked on its splendid condition and very trim appealance. The grounds and track are certainly in very good order, and patrons lor the Boxing Day meeting are certain +o bo pleased with the preparations made to ensure good racing. The appointments are also in first class order, and present a well cared for appearance.
A start will be made early in the New Year with the erection of Chancellor Ridge hut on the Fox Glacier. The hut has been put together at Timaru, and the woodwork will consist of Oregon pine. It is being sent south in bundles of forty pounds weight, as the material has to be packed by man power to the site for erection. The Alpine Club undertook originally the erection of this hut, but the Tourist Department final'}’ prividing the grant, and the work is now being carried out bv the Public Works Department.
It is the intention of the Pub ic Works Department to place Westland men seeking employment on the construction df the main south road ft Welleka. Parties may he formed erd contracts will be let for various sections. Comfortable hutments have been supplied for accommodation, and stores etc., are obtainable at reasonable prices. Those desiring work can obtain steady employment for sometime, as there is a considerable expenditure to be carried out.

A slight shock of earthquake was felt at Beef ton about a quarter to- four ou Thursday morning. A quake was also felt at about 10 minutes to eleven.

The improvement in road access and accommodation has resylted in a large influx of visitors to the Fox Glacier. For the information of our readers who are interested, ive reprint extracts from the Lands and Survey Report of 1895-6. The special reports on the Glacier were made by Mr W. Wilson, Surveyor and the late Mr C. E. Douglas, Explorer.

School Concert Important Announcement. —As it has now been decided to hold the concert on both Wednesday and Thursday next, the following arrangements have been made regard-' ing tickets and booking. All tickets already sold may be used either night. The Box Plan will be open from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday afternoon next as Miss Mclntosh’s shop, reservations will be available for both nights. Those who have already booked 'for Thursday may transfer their seats to Wednesday night ou presentation of tickets. Hoklof downstairs tickets may also exchange tickets for circle seats on payment of the difference in price and booking fee. Prices: Circle 2s 6d and 3d booking fee. Front stalls 2s; back stalls Is. No further downstair tickets will be issued. The additional seats now available will be sold a.t the door.
The shelter but at Hans Bay, Lake lianieri, provided by the Tourist Department at the request of the Acclimatisation Society, was erected during the week. It is placed in a handy position to the Tahua track, and provides camping accommodation for those desirous of staying over night and making an early start on the mountain climb. It is available also to bathers as a dressing room, there being a shelving beach on the water front The shelter will be much used by picnic parties visiting the lake for the day. During the holiday season it is intended to have the open crossing of Talma Creek maintained in passaide order so that motorists may use the newly constructed road towards Dorothy Falls, as far as the roadway now permits vehicle traffic. The new road gives several pleasing waterscape views of the lake, new even to regular patrons of Lake Kanicri.

Yesterday Mr J. M. Samson, of the Public Works Depatrment, inspected Mahinapua Creek with a view to arranging for the expenditure of the Tourist Vote obtained on the application of the Westland Acclimatisation Society. It is understood the work m he carried out will include the erection of a 40-ft. jetty in deep water at Shanghai Point, and the construction of a six chain approach track. The balance of the vote will be devoted to creek-clearing, commencing at the falls where a channel will be cleared of large' stones. Thereafter some one hundred snags are to be removed and a trial will be made of weed clearing with a drag harrow. The work will be carried out by day labor under the direction of Overseer Millner of the Westland County Council.
