TRAFFIC INSPECTOR OFFERED BRIBE. [By Telegraph', Per Press Association.j AUCKLAND, December 10. An offer of a new suit if he would overlook an offence of speeding in a motor-car was made to a traffic inspector of the Main Highways Board by a passenger in a taxi driven by Reginald Lincoln, of Auckland, who was fined £4 and costs at the Otahuhu Police Court for exceeding the speed limit on the Great South Road: Mr Barrett, the inspector, said that he followed the taxi on November 15. It was doing forty-five miles an hour through Papatoetoe between two lines of motor-cars when a band was playing on the school corner: A chase followed, and it was not' until the car had reached RuncinVan that he was able to charge the driver with speeding. There were two passengers, both of whom smelt of liquor.
One passenger handed the witness a card, and said: “If you turn up tomorrow morning you can get a new suit out of. that.” The' ca'se was not defended. -
NAVAL REGULATIONS. WELLINGTON, • Dec. 12. A Supplementary Gazette issued tonight contains amended regulations under the Naval Defence Act. ROYAL SHOW-. INVERCARGILL, Dec. 12. The Royal Show was brought to a close to-day in bright sunshine and in the presence of a very large attendance. Southland*’s first “Royal’ is acknowledged on till sides to have been an unqualified success. It is expected that the balance sheet will show a handsome profit, justifying the confidence of the Royal Agricultural Society in allotting this year’s Royal Show to Invercargill. Additional championship awards are as follow: —Clydesdales—Champion mare, Fleming Bros., Crookston, “jßoqulmn Klcctra.;” ‘reserve champion. ready to sail. DUNEDIN, Deeembed 13. The Byrd expedition ship, “City of New York, made a trip to the Heads yesterday to adjust compasses and test the radio apparatus. The local agents received a radio from Byrd stating that lie is awaiting a report from whaling ship captains before issuing orders. 'lhe City of New York is ready to sail at a minutes’ notice, probably within three or four days.
