SUGAR OR MILK. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). LONDON, Dec. 11. Arrangements have been finalised to launch a big marketing scheme for New Zealand sugar of milk throughout Britain in the new year, from Edendale factory, Southland. It will be imported in crude form, refined in Britain and distributed to grocers. Distribution is at present confined to chemists, who charge very high prices. Only restricted foreign supplies are available. Sugar of milk is used to humanise cow milk. TALLOW SAT.ES. LONDON, Dec. 11. At the tallow sales 996 casks were offered and 394 sold, at an average decline of sixpence. Quotations for mutton, fine 38s 9d, medium 35s 6d; beef, fine 40s, medium 35s 6d.
TREASURE SHIP ARRIVES. LONDON, Pec. 11. The (Italian .treasure ship “Leonardo Da Vince” freighted with the greatest treasure works of art a vessel ever carried, valued at £14,000,000 was safely berthed at London aftei a great battle with raging seas. Pictures, ivories, furniture, statues and other irreplaceable works were undamaged and are being unloaded foi transportation to Burlington House exhibition. AMERICAN ENGINEERS. PROTEST AGAINST IMPORTATION TO RUSSIA. (Received this day at 8 a.m.) LONDON, TFec. 12. A strong protest against the importation of American engineers to Russia for work on confiscated great mining properties built up by pre-war capital and directed by British management, was made by Leslie Urquha.rt (Chairman of the Anglo-Asiatic Consolidated Limited), the founder of the Enterprise He states Americans of good professional standing are engaged at their own personal profit exploiting stolen property. He adds that this is diametrically opposed to the attitude of the most powerful American mining interests, who consistently refused to have any association with the Soviet.
BANK RATE. (Received this day at 8 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 12. The- bank rate is 5 per cent. SINGAPORE BASE. (United Press Association. —By Electrio SINGAPORE, Dec. 12. Ex-Chancellor Hailsham interviewed, declared Singapore! Naval Base was an essential condition to naval security. It not the difficulties of the Admiralty in providing naval security for the Empire would be enormously increased; als orequirements in other directions would have to he given up. When so far advanced, it was an act of folly unworthy of the Socialist Government. He hoped they would not he so mad as to pander to the Pacifist element of their own party, and suspend the work altogether. The base does not threaten anybody, but is part of their own essential Imperial advance. AFGHAN EXECUTIONS. (Received this dav at 10 a.m.) DELHI, Doc. 12. Nadir Khan has despatched a punitive expedition to the province of Kohidamin to subdue insurgent tribesmen, thirty of whom have been brought to Kabul and beheaded. The revolt has been caused by lan a t ieal. priests declaring Habibullah, the late King, was still alive. Nine persons were executed in Kabul last week on suspicion of being involved in conspiracy to overthrow the Government.
