SOLDIERS’ HALL

PROPOSED COMPLETION SCHEME

A meeting of ladies and gentlemen was held at the Soldiers’ Hall last evening to consider proposals for the completion of the hall, whereby the part would be carried out to the proposed building alignment with the Government Building adjoining. Mr D. Stevenson submitted a draft plan. The plan provides for a substantial addition to the main structure. The main entrance is to be from the front which will bo of suitable design with a portice at the entrance. On the right hand side entering will bo a committee or club room, with a gent’s dressing room, and next a ladies room considerably enlarged from the present room, and with direct access to the main hall. The whole on the left hand side from the entrance will be devoted to the social hall, which will provide seating room for about 120 to 130 at a sit down supper. In. close juxta-position will be the kitchenette with all necessary serverv for catering. The present annexe or supper room together with the present kitchen, will be taken into the present dance hall, which will thereby be enlarged substantially providing for a forty per cent additional attendance. The details of the proposal were discussed at length and various suggestions considered. Ultimately a final scheme of arrangement was agreed to, and Mr Stevenson asked to complete the plan and prepare an estimate. The Oluib has a building fund of about £l5O, and the building i,s free of debt. It is expected it will be necessary to raise about another £350, i and as the town will be provided with a social hall equal to all immediate requirements it is not expected there will be any special difficulty in raising the funds needed, for which a campaign will begin shortly. The present hall limited as it is, has been a boon to the town on many occasions in connection with important functions, and no doubt the citizens will readily assist with the extra money now required to make the Soldiers’ Hall more useful still for general purposes. It is 'hoped to arrange to start the work of extending the hall very soon in the new year so as to have the enlarged building available by Eastei.
