Doctor Doran’s annual report of “How he keeps America dry,” is an interesting record of accomplishment. , It also reveals the difficulties which 1/ prohibition agents of this country V have to face. |>v The Commissioner recognises these difficulties but contends that large as is the amount of illicit liquor maiuiPactured, smuggled and consumed, it is a mere fraction of the total in proprohibition "days. He employs an army of five thousand besides coast guards and customs officials.
Nineteen thousand offenders wore sent to gaol I'or a total of fourteen thousand four hundred years, and forty thousand other convictions were registered, and paid fines of three million sterling. The presence of grafting is openly acknowledged There are two hundred special agents who keep their eyes open for crooked enforcement officers. The latter earned five hundred gaol years and fifty thousand sterling in fines. During the year twenty-seven thousand illicit distilleries wore eliminated while two hundred and thirty thousand household worms and fermenters were seized and destroyed in every part of the country, together with more than thirty million gallons of liquor.
