BRITISH FREIGHTER IN TROUBLE [United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.] (Received this day at 11 a.m./ NEW YORK, Dec. 9. The liner France radioed that owing to heavy seas and head winds it was unable to aid the British' ireightei Volnmnia and is proceeding to New York, leaving the sinking ship and crew in mid-ocean, with two cargo boats standing by, unable to help. Hie France’s brief message said they had received the Volumnia’s S.O.S. on Sunday and went to her, hut the sea was too rough for lifeboats. After a radio conference with the Volnmnia and two unnamed cargo boats, it was decided since the France carried mails and passengers that it should proceed. The Volmmiia left Wales for Philadelphia and Boston on loth November, hut was disabled the same day and put hack to Falmouth, whence she departed on 18th November.
