PETROL PRICES. BROKEN GLASS ON ROADS. DUNEDIN, December 6. The quarterly meeting of the South Island Motor Union was heul today. Mr A. E. An sell, M.P., was in the chair. The follow ing remit was tarried: “That an effort he made to sccuro uniform prices for the wnoicsale nnd retail sale of motor spirit throughout the distributing d'stirds.” At a later stage of the meeting the nutter of petrol prices was aga.n /brought up by Mr ilalhdav, a"d it was decided to comma veu'e with the ’Department of Industries and Commerce, asking it to lr.vcs'ig-no rie* matter. It was resolved: ‘‘That it be made an offence under the motor regulations to leave broken glass or other materials on roads, such being likely to cause damage to the tyres of motor vehicles. This suggestion is made
with the idea of eliminating the existing practice of broken glass being left on roads either deliberately or through carelessness.”
The Executive was recommended to consider the numbering system of distinguishing main routes, and to submit an estimate of the probable cost.
South Canterbury Association forwarded a resolution advocating that nil main arterial roads should be nationalised and controlled by the Highways Hoard. The Chairman said he doubted whether the proposal was practicable. It was a matter for agreement between the Highways Board and the Counties. It was decided to give further consideration to the matter at next meeting.
The matter of compulsory stop signals at railway crossings was discussed. These were stated to be erected at many places where they were unnecessary, and this led to carelessness. In the opinion of Mr Ansell, the policy of the Railways Departmc.nt should he reviewed in this respect, and it was decided to recommend that this he done.
