WELLINGTON, Dec. 6. “The evidence satisfies me that in the interests of the men engaged in working the cargo, safety hooks should he used,” was a rider attached to the verdict to-day on a waterside worker, James Devid Kirkwood. While engaged at the .steamer Hangitikei on Tuesday evening lie was struck by an empty tray which fell from a hook on to the wharf, and he died later in tlu* hospital. The Coroner’s verdict was that deceased was killed whilst engaged in loading operations on the overseas liner Rangitikei, by being struck on the head by a falling cargo tray, part of the loading equipment.

PETONE FIRES. WELLINGTON, Dec. 6. Two large wooden houses and contents in Victoria Street, Pctone were totally destroyed by fire at 11.30 last night. A blustering wind was blowing, and to this being added the shockingly poor water pressure, the Brigade had an exceedingly difficult task to stop the further spread of the flames, the fight continued for three hours. The house was of Oregon, and was occupied by Mr Patrick Quinn and family. It was insured for £l5O (Royal Exchange) and £BSO (State). The other was owned by Airs King, occupied by her and Mr and. Airs Archer and family and insured for £SOO (State). Quinn’s furniture was insured for C49U (London and Lancashire).
