DEFAMATION ACTION
HEAVY DAMAGES AAVARDED. (Australian Press Association) (Received this day at 9.40 a.m.) SYDNEY, December 6. Five actions for deifamation arising out of the notorious “ faked ballot-box incident ” at Labour Headquarters, r Sydney, some years ago, concluded here to-day. The plaintiff, John Bailey) (President of the Australian Workers)' claimed £5,000 damages respectively from A. C. AVills, M.L.C., Georgei Smith, J. O’Reilly, J. Howie, and! Dave Rees, former members of the Australian Labour Party Executive, alleging the defendants had as executive officers prepared and read a defamatory report bdfore the A.L.P. Conference of 1922, describing Bailey as a political, leader and impugning his conduct as am election officer about that time. Tho jury to-day found in favour if Bailey and awarded damages as follows: —Against Wills, £2,750; Howie, Smith | and Rees, £500; O’Reilly £250. ’
