VICTORIAN ELECTIONS

RESULT NOT DECISIVE. (Australian Press Association) MELBOURNE, December 1. The Victorian State Elections were held yesterday, when 109 candidates stood for the forty-five scats that were contested. Twenty members (including 14 Labourites) had been returned unopposed. The returns are still incomplete. The present state of parties appears to be as follows: — Labour 30 Nationalists • 48 Country Parties 14 Independents 3 At the dissolution of Parliament the state of the parties was: Labour 28. Nationalist 20, Country Parties 14, Independent 3. The party leaders are apparently well ahead, but Air Groves (Minister of Railways) and Mr Cuthbertson (Honorary Minister) are both in a precarious position. The Labour Opposition has gained two seats. The nett result of the election seems to be a stalemate, as neither the Labour, nor the Nationalist-Country fusion will (be able to hold office with dependence on the unstable Independents.
