Thousands of Mohammedans ,in India to-day observed hartal, (day off mourning) as a ; protest against the passing of the Child Marirage Bill which prohibits marriages of Indian girls under fourteen. Previously there was no limit and it was quite common to see marriages of girls of ten years. »

Appeals to the Viceroy to prevent the Bill becoming law in. April, next .on the ground.that, the measure would in-? terfere with the rights of Moslems and the basis of Islamic law, proved fruitless.

Mohammedan shops were closed in chief Indian cities. In Calcutta Europeans have a difficulty in securing food supplies.
