A meeting of the Trustees of the Hokitika Savings Bank will lie held on Tuesday next, Dec. 3rd. at 2.30 p.m. The Nelson South railway which terminates at present at Kawahii. will shortly he opened to the Gownn. It is stated that on railway and road works in the Murchison County there arc at present 550 men employed by the Public Works Department.

While motor cycling from Greymouth on Sunday last, Mr Alex Cohen, of Reef ton, had the misfortune to have a nasty spill while coming down a steep hill near Ahaura. The brakes refused to act, and on rounding a curve the bike skidded and the rider was thrown up against a tree, which rendered him unconscious. He was later picked up by a passing traveller and brought on to Reef ton.

The death took place yesterday morning at the Grey Hospital of Mrs Mar v Lynn. She was a native of Tioperary, and was 67 years of age. She came to New Zealand about 45 years ago, setting! U : t Ureyimou.th, where she married. Mr and Mrs J. Lymn were appointed caretakers of the Greymouth Town Hall in 1906. Mr Lynn died shortly afterwards, Mrs Lynn carrying on as caretaker until nearly two years ago, when illness necessitated relinquishing her position, which she had held for 21 yeais. She had a stroke yesterday and was removed to the Hospital. Ihe late Mis Lvnn leaves no family, and had no near relatives in New Zealand.

By permission of the authorities, the Nelson Trotting Club will hold its next annual trotting meeting on Victoria Park, Greymouth. The date fixed is March 17 and 18, when the officials of the Nelson Club will visit Greymouth.

The earthquake last Saturday was not felt very severely at Murchison. Actually- it was more severe in the Gowaji Valley nearer Nelson, and some ■ genera l damage was done. Jt was felt generally in the northern part of the island, and caused a good deal of alarm at Nelson.

The present main road through Maruia to Nelson, now that the Lyell road is blocked, is in very fair order. The route adds some few miles to the journey, but passes through points of interest, and the scenery generally is interesting. Parties of roadmen" are engaged along the route steadily improving the road.

Members of the Bowling Club who attended the green yesterday afternoon were amazed to find that in spite of the very heavy downpouV of rain -of the previous two days, the green was in very fair playing condition, and enjoyable practice games were indulged in. The green this year is showing very marked drying up properties, and as soon as there is a couple of hours of sunshine, after any rain, the green is playable.

A meeting of the Nelson-West Coast section of the New Zealand Institute of County Clerks was hold at the County Chambers, Murchison, last Saturday evening. There were present; Messrs Bloomfield (Nelson), Fraser (Murchison), Millar (Buller), Keating (Grey) and Evans (Westland). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Boycs (Takaka) and Auld (Inangahua). A vote of sympathy was passed to the last named in his indisposition. Mr D. J. Evans presided over the meeting which discussed the proposed “Local Government Officers Bill” to be presented by the Institute to Parliament next session. Various amendments and suggestions in connection with the measure were brought forward and referred to the. Chairman to present to the Executive , meeting of the Institute at v Wellington this week. The meetiiig also discussed various matters of local body administration and office routine work, the exchange of views and methods in practice being instructive ancl valuable. It was regretted there were few opportunities of meeting to discuss local affairs, owing to the distance necessary to cover in travelling, but the hope was expressed that in connection with the annual meetings of the Institute there would be opportunities of Branch meetings to confer in regard, to general matters, regarding which ■it was possible to impart and glean much that was useful in respect to general administration.
