LATE LOCALS.
The Commissioner’s room at the Government Buildings was to-day the scene of a happy little function, when the civil servants of Hokitika met to bid farewell to Mr J. Downs, the custodian, who lias been attached to the Buildings for some years past, and who is leaving to-niorrmv under transfer to Invercargill. In eulogising his services, the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Mr AY. T. Morepth, stated that they were all sorry to lose, his genial presence, but were also pleased that evidently his ability had been recognised in higher circles. During his stay liere, Mr Downs had proved a capable and most obliging officer, and, in presenting him with a Kniaopi travelling rug and umbrella, he wished him every success in his future position. Air Downs, in a short but highly ' interesting speech, expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation of the handsome gifts, and the kind wishes of the staff. During his stay here, he had experienced nothing but goodwill and kindness from every member of the staff, and indeed from all the residents of Hold tike with whom he came into contact. Applause for the departing officer con eluded the pleasant gathering
