LOOT IN SEWER
MEN’S APPAREL STOLEN. AUCKLAND, November 2-f. Investigations into the cause of a sewer blockage at Otnhuhu on Saturday morning resulted in the discovery of a quantity of men’s wearing apparel which was stolen last week from a drapery establishment there. The building was entered through the hack door, the lock of which was found to have been forced, and goods valued at £2O were stolen. All the articles stolen, socks, trousers, handkerchiefs, and ties, were recovered. The blockage occurred in the main sower, but it was found necessary to open manholes in other places, and in each chamber more articles were found which had evidently floated down from the place where the goods were thrown in. It is thought that the thieves removed the heavy steel covering from the manhole and deposited all the goods in the chamber below, fearing that they might be found in tlreir possession by the police. The handkerchiefs were found in bundles of dozens.
