SPOTTED FROM ALOFT

VALUABLE COW SAVED

AUCKLAND, November 23

Aeroplanes are frequently blamed-for frightening cnttle and other animals, but there are occasions when aircraft serve useful purposes. A Papatoetoe dairy farmer, Mr Orr, is one who is rather pleased that a De Havilland Moth aeroplane belonging to the Auckland Aero Club flew over his property early yesterday morning, because the life of one of his valuable cows was saved through the action of the pilot.

About 5 o’clock yesterday morning Major G. A. C. Cowper was aloft with a pupil member of the club when he noticed one of Mr Orr’s cows in distiess in the paddock below. The pilot saw the cow stretched out on the ground near a dividing fence, and observed by the tracks the animal had made in the long grass that it was ill. So he decided to descend, and alighted in the paddock alongside the cow. Major Cowper found tlie animal to be in agony, and walked to Mr Orr’s residence. Mr Orr happened to be milking at the time, but he left the shed and accompanied the pilot to the paddock.

Mr Orr discovered that the animal bad developed milk fever. It had calved only the night before. The cow, which was a magnificent beast, soon revived when the proper remedies had been applied. Mr Orr was profuse in bis thanks to Major Cowper, and stated that he undoubtedly saved tlie life of tlie cow, which would have died had it been left very much longer.
