N.Z. INDUSTRIAL LAWS

IMPROVEMENT 9 PROPOSED

(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, November 25

Investigations are to be commenced early in the New Year with a view to improvements being made in the existing law relating to Workmen’s Compensation and the control of shops and offices, according to an announcement by Hon. Mr Veitcli, Minister of Labour, to-day. Mr Veitcli said that the Shops and Offices Act was in a chaotic condition, and he did not consider that it would be at all a simple matter to devise satisfactory legislation. as fairly strong conflicting interests were concerned.

“However,” he remarked, “I have no doubt that with the exercise of a little tolerance and common sense, we will arrive at a position that will improve the whole administration of the act.” be continued, “ that question will require very caretful consideration from every point of view. I think the time is ripe for a review of the existing practice and conditions. The problem is a very complicated one, and certainly it will not be possible to give everybody what he wants, but J do believe that, without seriously increasing the cost, we can create conditions that will be more helpful to those who suffer from accidents in industry.”
