THE SIkGAPO^’BASE.\ The Labour Government,!at Home is a trifle’ perptbxed about ' Singapore. Ware .it to adopt' the attitude -taken up by the previous Goveniment under Mr Ramsay MacDonald which Enjoyed a brief term of office in forthwith abandon the' construction of the naval base. B,ut it-. is . easier to abandon a project before'it has been fairly launched than 'when it represents -a costly undertaking -wellunder wav.- Though, therefore, 'it inight desire to take mpre J drastic action, the Government has merely decided to slow down the work: at.' Singapore pending the Five Power Naval Confeience in London. To stop the work altogether and cancel the contracts would cost, it has been estimated, between three and four millions of money, or about half the sum that is needed to complete the undertaking. —Otago Times. *
