Johnston) in the course of his report stated:— The most successful school gardens visited by me during the current month are at Southbridge, Leeston, Lyndhurst, Eiffelton in Canterbury, and on the Coast (I have still quite a number to visit) Barrytown, Humphreys, Woodstock, Koiterangi Upper, and Hokitika. It is pleasing to note that Taylorville has got its plot fenced and is doing good work both out of school and in class. The garden at Barrytown is a model of neatness both in its experimental and ornamental plots. At Eiffelton the teacher and pupils, supported by the school committee, are doing not only splendid work in a poor shingly soil, but are also beautifying the school surroundings by rustic fences built in a workmanship-like way. Under the leadership off Mr Partridge, the headmaster, the Hokitika grounds have been transformed from a wilderness of rushes into grassy lawns bordered by pleasing flower borders.
