The obligations of a motorist on a bitumen road were pointed out by the Chief Justice (ITon. Al. Afyers) in the Supreme Court at AVellington. His Honour stated that the fact that the bitumen road was made really for the convenience of motor traffic, and that it might bo difficult, at times, for a motorist to see persons on the bitumen, increased and not decreased the necessity for vigilance on the part of the motorist, If that were not so. it might give the motorist a license which, ns His Honour viewed it, the law did not allow him and which he hoped it never would,

The millionth chance of a freak hand in' auction bridge occurred at tiie Carlton Hotel a few weeks ago, when George du Oros dealt to himself thirteen diamonds, to ) Sir Charles p.\kes on his left thirteen spades, to Sir Charles Alandelberg, his partner, thirteen clubs, and to A. G. Rossiter thirteen hearts. Air du Cros. immediately laid clown his cards, asking “What can you do against this?” Sir Charles said: “Keep your cards up,” whereupon the other players laid down their cards, exclaiming, “We’ve pot thirteen cards of a suit alio!.. Sir Charles declared that he shuffled the pack vsix or seven times before Mr du Cros took them; “Air du Cros also shuffled before Mr Rossiter,” he said. “I, of course, told Air du CVds to pick up his cards because I saw that I had the winning hand. It Is freakish, if you like, but they paid on rhy" holding thirteen spades, which is seven tricks in spades and unbeatable? ”( ■;-> ,■ ' ,

At the mooting of the Westland Land Board on AVednesday afternoon, an application for a transfer of land recently sold by auction in Okuru, district came up for approval. Obr, jection was voiced as to the advisability of the transfer being approved, on the grounds that the buyers were, already very large land holders _in The district, and that there was .a necessity of more settlers being given the own-ortunity of taking up land in that district, rather than allowing 1 hem to be further restricted. Air Kitehingham who appeared for applicants made h strong appeal fco Board to allow the deal to go through and thereby allowing the estate of the deceased former holder to be wound up, pointing out That a.' large sum of money was being held-up of which the interest alone amounted to over £$ per week, Air Clayton pointed out. that proposals were recently mooted to spend £25,009 to open up the district for settlement, but the grant, ing of the application would tend to minimise this move. It was aiso mentioned that no objection had been raised to the application, though' one speaker "stated there" was some objection in; the district. This objection was referred to- by anotner speaker as one who had been over bid ■ at the auction .sale. (I “Mr Kitehingham stated that the vendors had been disappointed -at' the ..price realised, but ~that the Board had no jurisdiction against the' freehold only against the. leased ; land. The whole had been put up in' one lot,-and though the value for ; this, -section . .had been put down tentatively at £SO, the whole deal could not be put;.through, until the anproval of ' this:-particular M*> timi: for transfer was given. AlessrS Gibb and rCfoyton - continued to adhere to their desire to have consideration adjourned till next meeting, and the Commissioner also agreeing, the matter was deferred to next meeting, when there- would .probably bo T a larger membership, Alessrs Ward and By all being unavoidably absent that .-aftePßOQnr cr
