EMPIRE TRADE
AN AUSTRALIAN VIEW
' (Australian Press Association)
(Received this day at 9.40 a.m.) CANBERRA, Nov. 22. The Minister of Customs (Mr Fenton) commenting on Lord Beaverbrook’s proposal for free trade within tlie British Empire, declared Lord Beavorbrook should make an attempt to put Britain in order before setting out to remedy the position in the Dominions. “Our policy is undoubtedly Australia first, Britain next, then the sister Dominions. We intend to revise the tariff in order to encourage the development of our own industries. Britain iby contrast, has allowed manufactures from the cheap labour countries of Europe to establish themselves in. the United Kingdom, with the result that they are able to produce goods at a lower cost than British manufacturers, and arc enjoying a preference that certainly is not right.”
