WELLINGTON, Nov. 20,
A serious charge was laid against John Campbell Burns, Headmaster ol the Petono West School, and a Borough Councillor, in the Petone Magistrate's Court to-day, when Vincent Furniss, the father of Rov Fuiniss. aged 11, a pupil, claimed £25 compensation for damages due to a thrashing given his son by Burns, which was alleged by plaintiff to have been unduly severe. It was admitted that the hoy was disobedient, and deserved a punishment. Roger Bakewcll, medical practitioner, in evidence, stated that lie had examined the hoy, and had found the forearm and hands covered with welts and the hips and lower part of the body bruised. The police evidence was similar. The hoy also gave evidence. The defence was a. complete denial of causing the injuries, though there was an admission of punishing the hoy, who was alleged to have resisted the punishment. The case will he resumed in Wellington.
