A LYNCHING
“SANTA CLAUS” BANDIT,

NEW YORK, Nov. 20
At Eastland: (Texas) Marshall Ratcliffe was lynched by one hundred men to-night, following on his attempt to break gaol. Ratcliffs is notorious as “the Santa Claus Bandit,” who, dressed in a Christmas outfit on December 23rd. last year, led a gang into a Risco bank, killing two officials, and escaping with several thousand dollars. He had already been convicted of murder, and when awaiting a new trial, lie tried to escape from gaol this morn ing. The mob hauled him over a telephone yard arm. The rope, however, broke, and, falling, Ratcliffe pleaded for time to make a speech. He could not make himself heard, however, and within a few minutes he died at the end of a stronger rope.
