Yesterday was a very wet day. In
the morning there was a misty rain that got heavier as the afternoon wore oil, the rain continuing quietly but incessantly, though the downpour was not of an extremely heavy nature. The weather lifted in the night, ami this morning the rain had stopped though there are still heavy clouds. The raintall for the 24 hours to 9 a.m. was 1.91 inches. There was a fair flood in the river during the afternoon and night, hut no damage is reported locally so far. At CJreymouth. the Grey river was in heavy flood, but the danger passed over as the tide started to fall in the early morning Some damage is reported on the Otira line and the goods trains last night were cancelled, hut repairs were expected to be completed early this morning. ,
The formation of a division of the New Zealand branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign Society in the northern half of the South Island was the subject of a letter received by Westland Hospital Board at its meeting on Monday evening. The letter stated that a provisional committee met recently with a view to taking the necessary steps towards the “ grouping ” of the :provincial districts’ of Canterbury, Marlborough, Nelson and Westland—all the area of the South Island north of the Waitnki river—for the formation of n division of the Cancer Campaign Society, According to the letter, the objects of the society are to establish and maintain at various places throughout New Zealand an association or associations of persons, firms, and companies interested in the furtherance of a campaign for the prevention and cure of cancer and similar malignant diseases. To establish and maintain in the main centres throughout New Zealand, laboratories and equipment for the same, with a view to accurate investigation of the causes, results and treatment generally of cancer and similar diseases. The board passed a resolution receiving the letter, and promising every possible assistance to the; movement.

The following were the notifications: West Coast— Diphtheria 7. Canterbury Scarlet fever 9, diphtheria 6, tuberculosis .7, pneumonia 3, pneumonic influenza 5. Six deaths occurred in Canterbury as follows: Tuberculosis 3, typhoid fever 1, diphtheria 1, pneumonic influenza 1. No fresh cases of typhoid wei l e reported.
The connexion between tonsilitis and affected teeth , had been shown as a result of the long waiting list of persons desiring to lie operated upon at English hospitals, said Dr E. A. Walker to the New Plymouth Rotary Club the other day. Persons always had to wait some time before they could be admitted and when their names were placed on the list the doctors told them to keep their teeth attended to in. the meantime. When the time came for them to be admitted for the operation it was often found unnecessary and the fact was a significant one, Dr Walker thought,
The wedding was solemnised at St, Mary of the Angels, Boulcott Street, Wellington, on Thursday last, of May Teresa, third daughter of Mrs and the late Mr J. F. Sweeney, Wellington, and Hugh William, eldest’ son of Mr and Mrs James Brown, Blaketown, The bride who entered the church on the arm of her brother-in-law (Mr W. G. Webster), wore a frock of ivory satin with veil of embroidered tulle held ,in place by a band of orange blossom , A shower bouquet of pink and cream roses and maidenhair fern was carried. The bridesmaid, Miss Cecelia Sweeney, sister of the bride, wore pink: crepe de chine embroidered with green and a picture hat to match and cairied a bouquet of pink roses. Mr R. Scott acted as best man. A large number of guests were afterwards entertained at a reception. Later Mr and Mrs Brown left for Auckland where the honeymoon is being spent, the bride being attired in a fawn costume and fur with hat to match.
