A LUCKY ESCAPE
CAS FROM FRACTURED MAIN IGNITES
CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 15
A jet of burning gas spurting from a fracture in a six-inch gas main at Wilson’s Road ft Martins caused no small amount of excitement shortly before nine o’clock last night. Iwo men who "ere working in a sewer excavation at the point had a lucky escape from serious injury, coming through an unpleasant experience with only minor burns ft was the light from a hurricane lamp by which they were working that caused the escaping gas to take fire.
'flic excavatum work was being earned out in sandy soil, and the fracture was due to the earth subsiding and causing excessive pressure to he placed on the gas main, which at this point runs close to the line of the sewer There was a rush of gas, and the fumes quickly ignited on reaching the fame of the lamp. The men fortunately were able to leap clear without suffering any seriour hurt.
The Christchurch Fire Brigade was called out. Sand and water were poured into the pit and by this means the flames were extinguished. Steps were then taken to repair the damaged main.
