Air 11. P. Donald.. Chief Postmaster, Christchurch, has been appointed Chief /Postmaster at Auckland, in succession to Air AY, J. Gow, who is now Assistant Secretary to the Post and Telegraph Department.
Air Donald entered the service as a message hoy, at the age of fourteen, forty years ago.

Twenty-live coi'itribiVtoVs, retired by reason of ago oj* length of service, were granted allowances of a total of £6193 per annum, and five contributors retired as medically unfit were granted allowances totalling £522 per annum.
An application for an additional allowance on account of retirement through injuries received whilst on police duty was'refused. Thirty-ALur widows and thirty children were granted the statutory allowances, amounting to LTB34 per annum.

FIRE; AT-TAUAIARUNUI
HOTEL AND-OTHER. BUILDINGS DESTROYED.
TAUAIARUNUI, Nov. 15
A fire- at three o’clock this morning at Owliango. resulted in the destruction of three.building's. The fire-commenced at the rear of- the Commercial Hotel an. eighteen-rpomed building, and spread rapidly- to an adjoining empty shop and dwelling of five rooms and to a six-roomed dwelling occupied by A. J ohnston.
In tlie absence of a water supply and fire fighting appliances, the three premises mentioned were destroyed. The blaze spread so rapidly that the Johnstons escaped with only a few personal effects.
The hotel was unoccupied while it was feiiig renovated. The insurance on the hotel are not available. The unoccupied shop and dwelling were own (>d by Air T. y ” lvee, and were insured for £159 in the Guardian Office. Johnston's house was owned by C. R. Holm of Auckland. The insurances on the house are n'ot-available, hut there was £SO on the furniture.
FREFAIAS'ONRY. AUCKLAND, Nov. 18. The, annual meeting of the Now Zealand Grand .Lodge of Freemasons will begin on Wednesday, November 27th. HOMESTEAD BURNT. OPOTIKU Nov. 18. The homestead of -T. T. Clark, of Paerata, was totally destroyed by fire on Saturday night. The lamily were attending the picture'-' end nothing was saved. House and furniture were insured, hut. Clark is ~ heavy loser. AYAT.KBST.DKR ’S DEATH. NAPTEP. Nov. 18. James-Tunes, a watersider, died as a. result of being choked by a piece of hone during his. evening meal on Saturday. A verdict of accidental death was returned. SUPREME COURT SENTENCES INVERCARGILL, Nov. 18. At the Supreme Court, Patrick O’Donnell, a farmer, with eleven of a family, was sentenced to six months hard for perjury. TJis son Joseph also for perjury to two months reformative. James Duncan for two charges of forgery and uttering two years reformative.
