CORRESPONDENCE.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —Several months ago a petition was presented to the Westland Count.} Council asking for access to the various holdings on the southern side ol the Big Waitaha River. It was then decided that the matter receive the favourable consideration of the Council, but so far nothing has been done in the matter. At the present time it is necessary for those who have milk or cream to dispose of to- ford the Bi' Waitaha River, which at times is rather dangerous. On Monday evening last an accident occurred to Mr Pat Douglas, junr., when a fatality was narrowly averted. In crossing this stream, the horse stumbled among the rough boulders, with the result that the horse and dray were washed over the falls and the horse drowned. Douglas was carried further down stream and was saved by bis brother and myself who happened to have heard his call for help and we just had time to get our boat out and caught him about four chains down stream.

The construction of this road on the southern side to connect up with the main road at Pukekura is a very necessary work. Even if two miles wore made at the present it would enable the present suppliers to get their produce out without having to run the risk so often of losing their lives. It is hoped with this information published that the authorities will take some stops immediately to help to avert a fatality which at present may occur at any time under the present conditions.

I am, etc., HERBERT HENDE Waitaha, November loth.
