Mr Adam Adamson, the “ambergris king,’’ was visited last week at his Doughboy Bay camp, by a party which tramped through over, the hills from MaSon’s'Beach, states the Stewart Island correspondent of the “Southland Daily News.” Mr Adamson was in good health. Though the absence ofwesterly winds had prevented him getting the usual supply of ambergris from the beach itself, nevertheless by his experiments with the creeks in sandhills lie'had dislodged some nice pieces oi old matured sorts. These pieces, which' apparently have lain buried in the sand, are the most valuable of the various grades. The party were shown five fine oz. pieces in particular, weighing about 6oz. each. These alone are worth about £4 an ounce in London, so the parcel should net about £l2O, apart from his other various grades and smaller piece?. Mr Adamson’s method of diverting the creeits uy damming them up with wreckage enables the small sandhills to he scoured out and exposes the valuable substance. In nio-t cases it is carried out to sea, but the surf beats it hack again further along the beach. As the ambergris season is now practically over, a boat is calling in a few days to shift his camp to a part- of the coaSt known as Smoky, where some gold prospecting will be done until he comes out' at Christmas.'
