ALLEY DEFEATS VANCE
■ t - . A GREAT WRESTLING CONTEST. WELLINGTON, November 10. tiniie. j : _ When Vance ' staggered to his feet Alley rushed in ami got him.on his head, and doing the ‘‘ aeroplane ” spin with him, swung him to the mat with terrific force - . A fall-was awarded, and Vance, who was unable to move, had 10 be carried to his corner. AVhen the gong for the ' sixth round sounded Vance was in such a bad way, suffering from the effects of the punches that his seconds were forced to , throw in the towel. “RABBIT” PUNCH AGREED UPON, It was stated prior to the contest by the re'feree (Mr J. Creeke) that the “rabbit” punch would be allowed, providing it did not travel more than six inches. t[i The last 'two rabbit punches that Alley got in to travel .a,, great ,(Instance further, and it was apparently for this reason that hoots greeted the winner. Up to the time the rabbit punches were applied Vance had the best of the contest j having secured a fall by the “ crucifix ”in the second round. -The match was a most exciting one, and the bqst.held in Wellington so far. ,
.. . A FAST PACE. Soon .after the commencement of the first rqqnd,. Vance flung Alley to the mat, but,. Alley, rising quickly, rushed his man and, getting him to the mat, secured, a headlock" from • which nftei some difficulty Vance managed to escape. ■ A moment later Alley had Vance on,,the mat again with a similar hold, but Vamje wriggled but and secured an armlock on his opponent. AVhen Alley freed! himself he went 'for a double* toehold, which he missed. A t moment o,f : chasing around the ring saw Vance get'-a body scissors, but Alley slipped'away and Vance, rushing wildly around with various gesticulations, to thef delight' of : the crowd, got a waistlqck on Alley arid him down. The'pade was so fast in this round that it seemed as if the bout could not possibly last the distance.
A FALL TO VANCE. As soon as the gong sounded in the second round VaricO cairn flying out wildly ftncTgetting in both fell' tb the mat. Vapce got a double toe-hold, but Alley Wriggled out arid obtained a headbar. The pair remained on the mat some time, and a section of tbp crowd called out, .“ Go on, finish him, Farmer,” while others shouted, “What about a crucifix, Tom ? Give him a ‘ rabbit’punch ■ Each fri'an, secured a toe-Jiold , ’and a fierce struggle for supremacy ensued. Alley is clever, but Vance proved the cleverer; Like a flash he got the “ cruicifix ” hold on Alley, and the crowd yelled' itself, hoarse. Yell as they 'might, however, Alley could not free himself, and the referee awarded Vance a submission fall. Vance got the famous hold on 6min. 28sec. after the commencement of the second round. It was a beautiful piece of work.
VANCE FORCES THE PACE. It required only seconds for the pair to bn the mat after the start of the third round.' '‘ Vance tried to get the “ cruicifix.” again, and Alley, seeijfg it coming, wriggled away with a desperate effort just in time. Alley was then caught'With a single toehold from which he got, clear. Allpy whipped in a “ rabbit ” punch and the farmer started back. “Go on, Alley,” yelled his supporters, “give him another.” Vance leapt in and secured a wristlock and the pair went to the mat again, struggling’ desperately. Alley got a body press; Vance got away; each man was on his feet looking for a chance to get a reprieve, grip when the gong wient. Both were loudly applauded.
FIERCE STRUGGLING. The stbk of round four saw some fierce struggling, and Alley flung Vance to the mht. Vance got a short arm scissors, and tried to change it to a body lock, but Alley got clear. Alley, with one fall against him, was taking every caution, but the farmer was extending himself right out. He seemed full of confidence, but Alley got a body press which kept them on the mat for some time. | Alley flung Vance, but the latter got'a headlock, and the pair struggled desperately. A moment later Vance flung. Alley and got a headlock. Alley secaped, and applied a face bar, which, try as he might, Vance could not manage to relax for some time. Alley secured a toe • hold, • and wrist lock. He then sprang away, and flew in with a body press.. Vance flung Alley, and got twist lock and bend scissors. Vance secured a toe hold. The round ended with both men bn the mat.
THE “RABBIT” PUNCH. Vance, who gets in som/e most comical and furious poses, dashed out in the fifth round as. if he were doing to finish things. They went down to the mat, and the referee ordered a break. Alley tripped Vance,' and applied the short arm sciskors' to his opponent. After a desperate struggle Vance cleverly got away amidst cheers which he deserved. Alley then got a head scissors.
They rose to their feet and Alley like lightning got in a terrific “rabbit” punch. Vance immediately staggered and went down. As he tried to rise Alley leapt in and landed two more terrible “ rabbit ” punches with amazing rapidity, one after the other. Alley sprang in again as Vance tried for a safe position, and catching him up gave him the “ aeroplane spin.” Then he flung him with great force to the mat. There was a thud and Van tie remained still, a big number of the crowd hooting loudly. Vance was taken to bis corner, and when the gong for the sixth round sounded he was unable to carry on. It was a splendid match and a return bout between the two men would be a big draw.
