LATE LOCALS.
It is stated that the lamb mortality which caused serious loss to breeders in Southland last year is again in evidence in certain districts in the vicinity of Mataura. So far no heavylosses have been reported, ' but several farmers at this early stage of the. season nave experienced appreciable losses. The baffling disease has attacked only- the strongest lambs.
Messrs W. Weddel and Co. Ltd.,* advise dated London, Bth instant, as follows.—Danish butter 186 s to 199 s (last week 192 sto 1945); New Zealand, unsalted, 184 s to 188 s (188 s to 190 s); New Zealand, salted, 170 sto 174 s (175 s to 0.80 s). Market slow. New Zealand cheese, white, 93s (94s to 955); New Zealand cheese, coloured, 92s to 93s (93s to 945). Market steady. * Canadian cheese, white, 95s to 97s (95s to 975); Canadian cheese, coloured, 95s to 97s (95s to 965).
A cargo of 10,500 case of bananas was brought to Auckland' by the Union Company’s island steamer Waipahi, which arrived from Apia, Samoa'', last week, states the “New Zealand Herald.” The fruit is reported to have arrived in excellent condition, This is noteworthy because it is the first cargo of Samoan fruit to be brought to Auckland in a vessel not fitted with ooid storage. The fruit was carried in specially-venti-lated holds, fitted with large electric fans.
There was an amusing anti-climax in Auckland to what at first glimpse appeared to be another tragedy of Grafton bridge. Hearing what he thought to be groans coming from the gully, a passer-by became alarmed, and informed the police. A search was made, and, guided by the alarming sounds, a constable soon came on the scene, of the supposed: tragedy. A vagrant was found sleeping peacefully. His loud snores had been the cause of all the excitement.
