STATE OF TERROR

DUE TO THE 11 RIPPER.”

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.)

BERLIN, 'November 12.

According to a report- from Dusseldorf, Baron Von Zigesa, Chief of the Dusseidorf Police, declares: “1 cannot sleep at night; 1 awake from a nightmare m which 1 think 1 am the ‘ Ripper ’ in the act of committing a horrible murder.”

Zigesa’s state of mind is characteristic of the panic-stricken city. Beneath its outward calm, Dusseldouf is in a frenzy of hysterical terror. Jf a child is ten minutes late the mother telephones the over-worked police, imploring them to send a search party. The newspaper offices are besieged all clay by people who think they have clues. Hundreds of sinister rumours are current that bodies of children and girls have been found. Half-demented men give themselves up to the police, accusing themselves of being the “ Ripper,” but are always completely innocent. In the 'meantime, the “Ripper,” with the brazen lore ' for sensation which is his main trait, and his mania, proclaims in a second letter to a newspaper that lie will surrender to the police when his victims number, thirty. To-day the police began digging in the field indicated in the “Ripper’s” map. They did not find a body, hut located a number of articles which are considered important.
