SOCIALISTS AND THE KING
(London Paper.) “Gentlemen, I give you the King.” Many of the guests at a 1 dinner given by Air Arthur Henderson, the Foreign Secretary, at Geneva the other night, seemed quite surprised at a Socialist Minister proposed such a toast, especially as his predecessors never used it on like occasions. As a matter of fact, the King has no more loyal subjects than Air and Airs Air and Airs Henderson are still completely in the dark regarding the reported engagement of their sons to American heiresses. “Although the report appeared a month ago,” said Mrs Henderson, “we nave not heard a word about it from them. f -X- -X- * Aleantime, Whitehall is still laughing over the experiences of a Socialist Alinjster and his dignified private secretary at a London railway station the other day. ' : Following the usual routine the efficient secretary booked seats in a lirstchiss carriage of the train, engaged rooms at the hotel in the provincial towm to w r Kich they were bound, and then, having provided the chief with a typewritten statement of the routine to be followed, made his way to the station with the portfolis and stationed himself at the carriage door. * -X- -X- -XThe Alinister, contrary to his habit, arrived in good time, a porter following with his bags. At the carriage door he offered the porter a shilling, but the porter would not take it. “You are Air So-and-so, sir, aren’t you?” asked the porter. “Yes,” said the Alinister. “Then comrade,” said the porter, “’’m taking no money, but I’d like to introduce a few pals.” The Alinister acquiesced, and the pained private secretary remained at tne carriage door while the Cabinet Alinister enjoyed a few minutes chaff with such “comrades” as could be found on the platform.
